Confucius, or "孔夫子" (Kong Fu Zi), b. September 28, 551 BCE
While we do not study Confucius on 9/28, we will be getting into Chapter 5 this week which will cover many of his teachings.
In the Chinese-speaking world, 9/28 is set aside as a sort of "teacher's day." While classes resume for the most part, students in places like Taiwan give their teachers gifts as a form of celebration. There is also a special dance performed at many Confucius temples, one of which is in Taipei, the capital:
As we will discuss on Thursday, the influence of Confucius cannot be overlooked. We will be comparing various Chinese cultural systems which like their European and Indian counterparts, seek to provide answers and order to the world of Period 2.
